Hamilton and David Woods\, Curator\, painter\, and installation artist\, as he details the origins of his passion for art as well as his many adventures creating his newest exhibition Hidden Blackness\, the first ever Canadian exhibition of Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901). Bannister was a St. Andrews\, New Brunswick born\, African American art pioneer who in 1865 became the first artist of African descent\, and first Canadian\, to win a major art prize in North America (The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition Art Exhibition First Place Medal).  \n\n\n\nFor the past quarter century\, David Woods has been the principal curator of African maritime art bringing to light long ignored artists such as Africville born pastoral painter Edith Macdonald-Brown (1886-1955) and sculptor and craft artist Audrey Dear Hesson (b. 1929-) the first graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art (1951). PACART is the exclusive transportation provider of the exhibition.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901) was born in Saint Andrews\, New Brunswick. His family lived in a segregated Black village at the eastern end of Saint Andrews colloquially referred to as Slabtown. Bannister was orphaned at age sixteen and left in the care of Harris Hatch\, a wealthy lawyer\, merchant\, and Registrar of Charlotte County\, for whom the artist’s mother had worked as a maid. Bannister’s interest in art emerged early and\, by his teens\, there are accounts of his drawings appearing on the barn doors and fences of Hatch’s farm. Much of his early life was overshadowed by the limited job opportunities and racism Black New Brunswickers faced. In 1850\, Bannister and his brother\, William\, moved to Boston\, where Edward worked as a barber ad eventually met Christiana Carteaux\, a hairdresser\, wigmaker\, and entrepreneur of mixed African American and Narragansett heritage. Bannister married Carteaux in 1857\, and she helped him become a successful professional artist in Boston and later Providence\, Rhode Island. \n \n \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Guests\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n David Woods is a multi-genre artist and performer. He is the author of Native Song a collection of paintings and poetry\, and has won national awards for his art\, drama and community arts organization including the Harry Jerome Award and Person’s Award. He was the organizer of the first ever Black History Month celebrations in Nova Scotia in 1984 and was instrumental in establishing Black maritime arts organizations including the Cultural Awareness Youth Group\, Black Artists Network of Nova Scotia (BANNS)\, Vale Quilters and the New Brunswick Black Artists Alliance.  \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Sylvia D. Hamilton is a Nova Scotian filmmaker\, writer and multidisciplinary artist. Her work has won the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media. Her award-winning films include Black Mother Black Daughter\, Speak It! From the Heart of Black Nova Scotia\, Portia White: Think on Me and The Little Black School House\, among others.   \nExcavation\, her multi-media art installation\, examines the interrelationship of history\, memory\, race and place/space. This work has enjoyed multiple iterations and exhibitions\, both solo and group\, in Nova Scotia\, New Brunswick\, Ontario and Quebec between 2013-2018. Until now\, the participants\, mostly art students\, who repeatedly wrote “I will not make any more boring art” across the walls of NSCAD’s Mezzanine gallery\, have remained unknown. As a curator of contemporary art\, she has an abiding interest in artist-led initiatives\, experimental forms\, the intersection between visual art and writing\, and the history of institutions. Past curatorial projects include work by artists such as Abbas Akhavan\, Stan Douglas\, Richard Ibghy/Marilou Lemmens\, Carole Itter\, Marianne Nicolson\, Walid Raad\, Hito Steyerl\, and Althea Thauberger. She has collaborated widely with other curators and institutions\, edited numerous publications and written for catalogues and magazines. Gordon harvests wood and animal materials through ceremony\, carving masks that embody the spirit of Mi’kmaw stories\, traditions\, and teachings. Each mask reflects a deeply personal journey—guided by the tree itself—and speaks to the lives of his people\, past and present. His work honours traditional knowledge\, ceremony\, and storytelling\, breathing life into Mi’kmaw characters through collaborations with dancers\, drummers\, and regalia makers. Also a skin artist with over 30 years of experience\, Gordon fuses tattoo design and carving to preserve and share cultural teachings. His work has been exhibited across Atlantic Canada and internationally\, including at London’s prestigious Collect Art Fair. DESCRIPTION:In The Courtyard – Pleasure Prospects by New Mineral Collective \n\n\n\nPleasure Prospects is a video that follows the artists Tanya Busse & Emilija Škarnulytė (New Mineral Collective) as they acquire prospector licenses\, with which they aim to perturb the values of the mining industry by holding fast their self-described position as “the least productive mining company in the world”.  \n\n\n\nNew Mineral Collective is the world’s largest and least productive mining company. They are an open-source entity\, working to infiltrate and subvert extractive industries with more reparative and imaginative futures exploring alternative forces such as desire\, body mining and acts of counter prospecting. In their video installation Pleasure Prospects\, New Mineral Collective follows the process of acquiring prospecting licences for alternative values and takes a critical look at what they call “perforated landscapes” – land altered by extractive industries.  \n\n\n\nFilmed at the World’s Prospectors Convention\, Ontario Place\, Pleasure Prospects sources research from Ontario topographical maps (from the Ministry of Energy\, Northern Development and Mines) and Google Earth. The film addresses ecological urgencies brought on by large-scale extractive practices\, connections between land and body\, and the environmental impacts of mining. The work encourages an understanding of large-scale global impact through bringing the conversation closer to the viewer\, drawing on connections between industry and therapy. New Mineral Collective prioritizes healing on many levels\, through creating an environment of pleasure\, renewal\, and revitalization\, something that is explored through their broader artistic practice.  \n\n\n\nIn The Studio – Print\, Glow\, Grow – Hands-On Artmaking \n\n\n\nJoin us for a vibrant night of creativity and connection through hands-on artmaking\, hosted in collaboration with the Youth Project. In it\, Peter Morin (Tahltan\, French Canadian) and Leah Decter (Canadian Jewish white-settler) mark the crossing of paths across time\, territories and ancestries through reading aloud as an assertion of Indigenous sovereignty and listening-while-drawing as a practice of white-setter accountability.   \n\n\n\nExperience X: where our paths cross live on Saturday\, October 18 from 6pm-midnight for Nocturne: Ground at the Halifax Central Library.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\n\nPeter Morin is a grandson of Tahltan Ancestor Artists. Morin’s artistic offerings can be organized around four themes: articulating Land/Knowing\, articulating Indigenous Grief/Loss\, articulating Community Knowing\, and understanding the Creative Agency/Power of the Indigenous body. The work takes place in galleries\, in community\, in collaboration\, and on the land. All of the work is informed by dreams\, Ancestors\, Family members\, and performance art as a research methodology. Morin completed his BFA at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver in 2001 and his MFA in 2010 at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan. Morin’s artistic practice moves from printmaking to poetry to installation to performance art. Morin’s first performance ‘I grieve too much’ took place at the Museum of Anthropology in 2005. Peter is the son of Janelle Morin (Crow Clan\, Tahltan Nation) and Pierre Morin (Quebecois). Throughout his exhibition and making history\, Morin has focused upon his matrilineal inheritances in homage to the matriarchal structuring of the Tahltan Nation\, and prioritizes Cross-Ancestral collaborations.  Morin was longlisted for the Brink and Sobey Awards\, in 2013 and 2014\, respectively. In 2016\, Morin received the Hnatyshyn Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Canadian Mid-Career Artist. Morin is an member of artist collectives : BUSHgallery and O’kinādās.  Peter Morin currently holds a tenured appointment in the Faculty of Arts at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto\, and is the Graduate Program Director of the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art\, Media and Design program at OCADU.  \n\n\n\n\n\nLeah Decter is a Canadian inter-media/performance artist and scholar who divides her time between Treaty 1 territory and Kjipuktuk/Halifax\, where she is a Canada Research Chair in Creative Technologies and Assistant Professor in Media Arts at NSCAD University. Holding an MFA in New Media from Transart Institute and a PhD in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University\, Decter creates work that straddles performance\, video and media arts\, textiles\, social practice and installation as well as academic and creative writing. Working from a critical white settler perspective her solo and collaborative artwork and research uncover and disturb social\, political\, relational and spatial dynamics of settler colonial whiteness in the everyday through practices of intergenerational accountability and non-colonial activation. Her artwork often calls into question dominant beliefs about\, and attachments to\, Canadian icons\, myths and visual/material culture. She has received numerous grants and awards for her artwork and research\, and has exhibited\, presented and screened her artwork widely in Canada\, and internationally in the US\, UK\, Germany\, Australia\, the Netherlands\, Malta and India. Decter’s artwork has appeared in publications including Fuse Magazine\, Studio\, Craft and Design in Canada\, C Magazine\, Journal of Canadian Art History and Border Crossings. She is an activist\, spoken word poet\, and the former Halifax’s Youth Poet Laureate (2023-2024). Damini is the founder of Damini Creatives and the Afro-Indigenous Book Club\, a book club created to encourage young people to read books written by Black and Indigenous authors and to share the realities and experiences of Black and Indigenous Canadians. Damini was the Junior Artist in Residence for Wellness Within\, a community organization working for reproductive justice\, prison abolition\, and health equity; CBC’s artist-in-residence for the Michaelle Jean Foundation Canadian Black Summit held in July 2022\, where she hosted an interactive community poetry booth. She is also a youth freelance journalist for CBC Mainstreet. She is the Vice-Chair of CPA High School’s Black Student Association. She has also enjoyed being a board member of the Nova Scotia Girls Institute for Resource and Learning (NS GIRL) and she is a member of the HRM Youth Advisory Committee. Damini has received multiple awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Damini loves to dance\, write\, create\, sing\, and perform poetry about social justice issues she cares deeply about. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKay Macdonald was born and raised in Halifax\, NS. Kay is proudly African Nova Scotian. Studying Performance Acting at Ryerson University in Toronto\, ON. At the end of 2016 with the political climate swiftly changing around her (en election of a new president) she knew her reaction had to be radical. Out of this desire to make a change she Founded and Co Created The Magic Project. Which focuses on bringing marginalized brilliance to the forefront of social media using the arts.  \n\n\n\nKay is also a Community Facilitator and Youth Programmer. She hopes to continue creating workshops\, holding space for community discussions and empowering youth through celebration. In 2020\, Kay\, Trayvone Clayton & DeRico Symonds created an African Nova Scotian community based\, youth-led initiative called The Game Changers. After a year of working together in advocacy\, activism\, and community they decided to collaborate officially. She has a BFA from NSCAD and movement is at her core of making. Munro uses the representation of line and lineage as underlying concepts in her fine art\, craft\, photography and dance. Continuously merging different mediums into finished pieces there is always a sense of multiplicity within her work\, she leaves space for her pieces to naturally evolve through reaction and discussion. Munro creates an ever-changing body of work that can be explored and realized in different ways. \n\n\n\nImage by Diane Moore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMakayla Criss received her professional training through the Maritime Conservatory of the Performing Arts – Teacher Training Program. Her studies included anatomy\, conditioning\, and child development\, all of which were tailored specifically for dancers. Makayla has also studied a broad spectrum of pedagogical approaches from highly respected and successful examiners and teachers. Most recently\, Makayla completed the full Horton Teacher Training Program through The Ailey School under the direction of Ana Marie Forsythe. \n\n\n\nWith training in a wide range of styles\, Makayla’s background includes Jazz\, Tap\, Contemporary\, Modern\, and Hip Hop. Later deciding to focus on Ballet\, Makayla has studied both the Cecchetti and Royal Academy of Dance syllabi\, and is passionate about reflecting strong technical training while allowing the body to adapt to other stylistic forms of dance. Makayla has attended classes for Professional Development at Steps on Broadway\, The Ailey School\, The Martha Graham School with notable teachers including John Vincent Leggio\, Nina Goldman\, and Terri Wright and locally with Darryl Tracy and Robert McCollum. In 2022 Makayla completed an internship with Mocean Dance throughout the creation process of Syreeta Hector’s piece “From the Top” which was performed at Fluid Forms in Halifax\, NS. \n\n\n\nOutside of the studio\, Makayla’s choreography has been featured annually at numerous galas and events including the Rotary Club of Truro’s Annual Fundraising Gala\, The Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation’s Annual Fundraising Gala\, New Glasgow’s Art At Night\, Youth Dance Fest East\, Local Love Truro Awards and CDA’s own B-Side Hip Hop Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZamani Folade is a sonic storyteller—writing\, producing\, engineering\, and performing every note she creates. Hailing from Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Zamani weaves together R&B\, Neo Soul\, and Jazz into a vibrant soundscape that celebrates self-love\, optimism\, identity\, and unapologetic Black girl magic. Her musical passport spans the U.S.\, Europe\, the Caribbean\, and Africa\, lighting up stages alongside heavyweights like London’s Estelle\, Jamaica’s Tarrus Riley\, R&B icons John Legend\, Mya and Ginuwine and jazz vocalist extraordinaire – Jazzmeia Horne. Using drag\, self-portraiture\, video game engines\, and set construction\, they are interested in camp\, the limits of representation\, and failure as a form of liberation. \nGallagher’s work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada\, the Locarno Film Festival\, the McCord Stewart Museum\, and MOCA Toronto\, among other contexts. \nGallagher is the recipient of the 2024 William and Meredith Saunderson Prize for Emerging Artists\, the Scotiabank 2022 New Generation Photography Award\, the 2022 Nova Scotia Emerging Artist Recognition Award\, and the 2019 BMO 1st Art Award. In 2023\, they were the Atlantic finalist for the Sobey Art Award. \nPhoto: Clara Lacasse \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Marissa Sean Cruz is a digital multimedia and video performance artist from Kjipuktuk (so-called Halifax). Cruz’s topics of interest are related to labour\, power and surveillance as seen through digital platforms and pop culture. Their experimental videos comprise found footage\, 3D modelling\, sound design and costumed performances to look at value systems with critical sensibility. These satirical works aim to capture a fast-paced contemporary present and envision possible\, liberatory futures. \nMarissa has been exhibited in venues like InterAccess\, Gallery 1C03\, Video Pool Media Arts Centre and Dazibao. Cruz’s various projects have been displayed throughout the United States and Europe distributed digitally through spaces like the Centre for Art and Thought\, Canadian Art\, The Art Gallery of Ontario\, PLATFORM Projects and more. \nPhoto: Courtesy of the artist \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Adrien Crossman (they/them) is a queer and non-binary white settler artist\, educator\, and curator currently residing on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe in Hamilton\, Ontario. They hold an MFA in Visual Art from the University of Windsor (2018)\, and a BFA in Integrated Media with a Minor in Digital and Media Studies from OCAD University (2012). Crossman is interested in the affective qualities of queerness\, investigating how queerness can be felt through specific aesthetics and sensibilities. In addition to having exhibited across Canada and internationally\, Adrien co-founded and co-runs the online arts publication off centre\, and runs the independent gallery Orchid Contemporary out of the garage in their backyard. His work focuses on climate crisis\, loss\, queer bodies and ecologies\, responding to the social and material histories of sites\, bodies and environments. Lou has performed and exhibited across Canada and Europe\, and he has participated in numerous residencies including at ISCP in NY\, La Cité des Arts in Paris\, Rupert in Lithuania and as participant and faculty at the Banff Centre\, AB. He was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2018 and 2021 and was one of 25 winners in 2020. Grounded in material exploration and research creation\, her work imagines the voices silenced by cultural and institutional omission and erasure. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada and the US. \nGibson is the author of two poetry collections. In 2019\, she published How She Read (Caitlin Press)\, a decolonial critique of the Canadian classroom centering Black womanhood. Currently on academic reading lists\, the collection was nominated for nine literary awards in 2020\, most notably\, shortlisted for the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize\, and winning the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize (BC) and the Pat Lowther Poetry Award (Can). \nGibson is a university lecturer in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University and the inaugural Advisor\, Equity\, Community & Care for the Faculty of Communication\, Art and Technology 2022-2024. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Kayza DeGraff-Ford is a visual artist born on Treaty 6 farm lands (Alberta) and based in Kjipuktuk (Nova Scotia). With a Visual Arts Certificate from Yukon School of Visual Arts (2017) and a BFA from NSCAD University (2021)\, they have received recognition through awards like the BMO 1st Art! Award for Yukon Territory (2017) and the grand prize at the NSCAD Student Art Awards (2020). Their paintings\, held in collections such as the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Art Bank\, have been supported by grants from Arts Nova Scotia and the Canada Council for the Arts. Kayza’s most recent work merges sewing techniques for hand-crafted borders with vibrant colour palettes in an evolving exploration of storytelling. Most recently\, their solo exhibition with The Blue Building Gallery was featured at Art/Toronto 2024. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Rebecca Fisk explores issues of identity in painting and multi-disciplinary work. She is a graduate of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA) and Mt. St. Vincent Art Gallery (MA Ed.). Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada. Her most recent solo exhibition Not Every Black Girl’s Story Is The Same was presented at the Chester Arts Centre Gallery\, Chester NS in Sept-Oct 2022. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Preston Pavlis’ work on canvas and fabric represents his interest in the fusion of painting and textiles as a means to explore narrative\, form\, and colour. Focused on poetic association and metaphor\, the resulting works in oil\, embroidery\, and collage are personal charts for time and memory. The works situate solitary figures on often non-descript grounds\, their gazes shifting between the viewer and somewhere beyond their space. Whether their expressions are pensive\, ebullient\, or intentional– they possess a palpable interiority. Pavlis’ figures convey a subtle energy and a deep sense of presence that is enhanced by their imposing scale. \nPreston currently lives in Halifax\, NS and holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions at MOCA (Toronto)\, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa)\, Stridge Gallery (Calgary)\, Bradley Ertaskiran (Montreal)\, Half Gallery (New York)\, Guts Gallery (London)\, the Winnipeg Art Gallery (Winnipeg)\, and Spurs Gallery (Beijing)\, among others. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto)\, the X Museum (Beijing)\, and is held in private collections throughout North America\, Europe\, and Asia. \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Vanessa “Nessy” Thomas is an African Nova Scotian artist from Preston\, Nova Scotia\, one of Canada’s historic Black communities. Her work explores themes of culture\, identity\, and belonging\, often reflecting her lived experiences. At the same time\, Nessy creates art for the sheer joy of self-expression\, balancing thoughtful narratives with the freedom of creation. \nArt has been a constant presence in Nessy’s life. Inspired by her mother’s work with acrylics and crafts\, she began sketching at 14 and has since expanded her practice to include acrylic painting and digital art. \nNessy’s work has been featured in cafés\, shops\, and festivals\, with her reach extending both locally and internationally. She has participated in the Halifax Mural Festival annually\, bringing vibrant energy and creativity to public spaces. Alongside these projects\, she has completed community art initiatives\, private commissions\, and public art installations. Venturing into the digital realm\, Nessy released a limited-edition NFT collection that sold out\, connecting her with collectors worldwide. \nThrough her art\, Nessy invites viewers to engage with cultural themes while sparking curiosity and connection. Always experimenting with new techniques and approaches\, she continues to expand her portfolio and push the boundaries of her creative practice. Felt Portraits DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Studio this Sunday to honour African Heritage Month!
