SUMMARY:OUR PAINTED HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Check out Our Painted House at the Gallery! \n\n\n\nThis drop-in activity is inspired by Maud Lewis’ iconic Painted House. Using a variety of materials\, you are invited to create your own artwork shingle to add to the painted house\, an almost-to-scale image of Maud’s home. Inspired by Maud’s keen observation of the world around her\, create something that reflects on these ideas: \n\n\n\n\nWhat do you notice outside your window\, at home\, or in your community?\n\n\n\nWhat are the things that are important to you?\n\n\n\nWhat patterns\, designs\, or images tell a story about your interests?\n\n\n\n\nThis project will run from November 2022 until May 2023 and will bring together hundreds of individual adorned shingles by visitors to the Gallery\, creating a large\, colourful installation-a reimagining of Maud Lewis’ Painted House and our collective communities.

SUMMARY:Make It Like Maud: Painting Class Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us this winter for kid’s painting classes at the Gallery. This 4-week workshop series\, led by artist-educator\, Rosemary Clarke Young\, will inspire young creatives\, while they learn new painting techniques and have fun! Each artmaking class will begin with a visit to the Maud Lewis Gallery to learn about her work before returning to the studios to create their own colorful painting! Ages 5-12\, all materials included. \n\n\n\nWorkshop \n\n\n\nEvery Saturday from January 14th to February 4th\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\n10am -12pm for ages 5-8 – Sold Out\n\n\n\n1pm-3pm for ages 9-12 – Sold Out\n\n\n\n\nThe workshop series is $100 for four sessions. Each class is 2 hours long. Pre-registration is required. If you need to cancel\, a $10 cancelation fee will apply for a refund. Please submit any cancelation requests in writing to info@agns.arrdev.ca. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nBedford artist and educator Rosemary Clarke Young has taught children’s art classes\, both privately in her home studio and in local schools since 2008. Though mostly retired from teaching now\, she does occasional workshops and AGNS art camps. She works in watercolour batik\, oil\, pastel and encaustic and exhibits her work in galleries and shows\, primarily in the Maritimes\, including the Teichert Gallery.

Exploring parallel themes\, subjects\, and contexts\, these screenings invite audiences to see the meaningful dialogues taking place between Canadian artists and filmmakers today. \n\n\n\nIn its first iteration\, this four-part film series draws on both animated and live-action shorts from the National Film Board collection to expand upon themes presented in the ongoing exhibition\, TYRANNY. \n\n\n\nIn examining issues and concerns that are intertwined with the systems of influence\, authority\, and control\, this permanent collection exhibition brings a fresh outlook on today’s society and political landscape to the forefront. Through the critical frame of their work\, the artists in TYRANNY highlight art’s ability to give voice\, raise awareness\, and challenge the status quo. \n\n\n\nKey Frames presents a response to the practices of four artists currently on view in TYRANNY reflecting their timely and universal themes and connecting them with the wider cultural discourses being held by talented filmmakers across Canada. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase Admission\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, February 2nd – Key artist: Lucie ChanIn her multi-layered\, multi-dimensional practice\, Lucie Chan makes heard the unspoken connections that bind us together. Moving\, inspirational works from Canadian animators speak to themes of love\, spontaneity\, and family. \n\n\n\nThursday\, February 9th –  Key artist: John ScottThrough his striking work\, John Scott illuminated a dark world where chaos and control blend in unexpected ways. Incisive\, insightful works from Canadian filmmakers explore notions of survival\, civilization\, and transformation. \n\n\n\nThursday\, February 16th –  Key artist: Garry Neill KennedyIn his trailblazing career\, Garry Neill Kennedy shaped conceptual art in Canada with his keen gaze into the systems of authority that surround us. Canadian filmmakers tell intuitive stories about warfare\, isolation\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nThursday\, February 23rd – Key artist: Camille TurnerThrough heroic performance works\, Camille Turner tells stories from our ignoble history to shed light on truths that resonate in the present. SUMMARY:Creative Minds: Painted Animations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a behind-the-scenes demonstration of the process of creating painted animations. Led by artist Megan Kyak-Monteith\, visitors will learn about her work and Inuit-led community storytelling and archiving. \n\n\n\nMegan is an Inuk artist who uses a variety of techniques in her practice to recall memories of her childhood in Nunavut and Nova Scotia\, including animations\, painting\, and storybook illustrations. You can visit Kyak-Monteith’s work in the exhibition Ta’n a’sikatikl sipu’l | Confluence\, in the Mi’kma’ki Artists’ Spotlight section. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\n\n\nMegan Kyak-Monteith (b. 1997\, Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet) is an emerging artist residing in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. She graduated from NSCAD University in 2019 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies\, specializing in drawing and painting. She works as a freelance illustrator for children’s book and magazines articles and continues to paint from her home in Halifax. Her work has appeared in Inuit Art Quarterly and Inuktitut Magazine\, and a series of children’s books\, The Nunavummi Reading Series. \n\n\n\nAbout the Program\n\n\n\nThe Creative Minds series hosts community leaders and creatives to respond to current events\, exhibitions on view\, or artworks in the Gallery. Through conversation\, music\, poetry\, or movement\, these events aim to provoke new ideas\, explore the unexpected and create more understanding for everyone involved.
